Being a stepmom

Being a stepmom

Today, my stepson turns 21.

So crazy.

It’s exciting, but kind of funny. I guess it marks the completely “official” start of his adulthood.

His Dad and I started dating when he was just 7, so I was blessed with the opportunity of being a part of his life since he was little.

I was there for his obsession with Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon cards. And also with owls, for a reason we never quite understood.

As he got older, his interests changed, but the core of who he is didn’t shift. He has been- and is today- a good, kind, and funny person.

But just because he is 21 doesn’t mean I stop worrying.

I hope he doesn’t miss out on all the wonderful things that can happen in your early 20s. I’d love to see him reach beyond his comfort zone and take this time to stretch professionally, and really see what he wants to do.

But no matter what, I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be his stepmom.

I’m full of gratitude for all the wonderful conversations we have. It’s been so fun to watch his sense of humor really take off and see his political views branch from his parents to something that is really his own.

Being a stepmom has given me so many unique opportunities.

Kids at wedding

With both of my stepkids, I left 90% of the parenting to either their mom or dad. That left me with the wonderful role of something more like a close Aunt. Someone they could talk to, usually about things that they may not want to chat with either their mom or dad about.

And they have helped me become a better person.

Because of them, I’m less selfish, more patient, and a better listener. I’m certainly not perfect, but I’m far better than I’d be if they weren’t in my life. I know that for sure.

So this weekend we’ll head to the college town where my stepson lives and take him out to lunch. He and my husband will have their first official beer together at Chili’s restaurant, and I’ll enjoy a little tonic and lime.

And I’ll also count my blessings. It’s an honor to be this guy’s stepmom.

I believe life is meant to be enjoyed and our frame of mind determines how much we allow ourselves to experience the beauty each day has to offer. Almost five years ago, I was depressed, physically weak and spiritually broken. Now I feel all the blessings of a healthy life and a grateful attitude. From positive vibes to simple pleasures- I'm sharing my thoughts on all the little things that make life truly amazing.
