Sober holidays | Tips for a Spectacular (and Sober) 4th

Sober holidays

The Fourth of July is almost here. This year it is particularly awesome since it falls on a Monday. This means many Americans are looking forward to a nice, long, three-day weekend to celebrate the birthday of our great nation.

For many people this means a few BBQs, enjoying some fireworks, and some adult beverages.

But if you’re one of the millions of people in recovery in the U.S., then as much as you love a good fireworks show, this holiday may feel a little lackluster. You may believe it’s only possible to feel the joy of belting out “It’s a Grand Old Flag” when you have a cold beer in hand.

But PLEASE don’t feel like you can’t enjoy this holiday simply because you don’t drink.

I use to be that way and I can honestly say it’s of no benefit. In early sobriety, I would be pissed and agitated throughout the holiday because I felt shorted.

It resulted in nothing, but a squandered paid day off… So not worth it.

If you are struggling, no fear. Many towns hold marathon AA and NA meetings on holidays. Definitely get to one and talk about what’s going on. No doubt plenty of people in that room are in the same boat.

As always, call your sponsor when things get tough. They’ve been there and will provide some words of wisdom.

But let’s just stay you want to make the most of the holiday, but are a little unsure of how to handle this whole thing whole without a drink in your hand or losing your shit. Here’s what has helped me in the past.

Do Your Best to Stay Cool- Literally

Sacramento River on the 4th of July

I live in California and it can get ridiculously hot here. You may not realize it or think it applies to you, but the large majority of people get agitated and less chill (yes, that’s a technical term) when they are physically hot. Just keep it in mind.

If you are already on edge about not drinking, then is baking in the sun on a boat a great idea? Maybe not. Opt for cooler activities, or at the very least don’t commit to something (like a boat trip) that you can’t easily escape if you feel yourself getting hot and bothered.

Making Drinking Fun

Just cause you’re not popping the champs doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some bubbles. Make sure to have fun drinks on hand so you don’t end up feeling shorted on sober holidays. Rarely have soda? Then this is definitely the weekend to treat yourself.

Like virgin drinks? Mix up a virgin strawberry daiquiri or margarita.

But seriously, a side note on this one- Make sure it’s not a trigger for you. I say this because they are triggers for me, so I avoid them all together, but if you love them and it doesn’t bother you, go for it.

nonalcoholic drinks

For me, I’m a bubbly water girl all day long. I love a Perrier with lime at a restaurant. At home, I opt for the Crystal Geyser Sparkling Mineral Water. They come in different flavors and I’m a huge fan of the mixed berry. Bonus with these beverages- Zero Calories!!

Tap into the Best of the Holiday

Forth of July Picnic Sacramento

It’s the Fourth of July for God’s sake, why not try out some of the holiday festivities you use to be too drunk (or hungover) to enjoy?

Find out where the local fireworks display is and take it in.

Get out to the 10:00 a.m. community parade you always slept through.

Enjoy those amazing cookies every supermarket makes this time of year with the red and blue sprinkles. Seriously, do it. They never disappoint.

Whatever slice of Americana you’ve missed in the past, now is your chance to experience it in all its glory.

Bottom line- Everyone deserves a joyful and relaxing 4th. Don’t feel Un-American because you don’t have a beer in one hand and a shot in the other.

And if all else fails, tap into the gratitude of knowing as long as you don’t pick up a drink, you can’t end up in the drunk tank!
